Local legend has it that Dr Taylor left the Mansion to Brunt because he was fed up with his other relatives arguing over who should inherit his considerable estate.
Dr Taylor died in 1788 and, having no children, left the Mansion to William Brunt, who was living in the house at the time. Commonly believed to be Taylor’s pantry boy, he was in fact a distant cousin.
